AAA Makes Insurance Discount Driver Refresher Course Available Online
New law gives seniors option for completing defensive driving course
Bellevue, WA (July 23, 2007) – Licensed Washington drivers age 55 and older have a new option for obtaining a premium reduction on their automobile insurance rates by completing a crash prevention course. Starting today, AAA Washington began offering its Mature Driver course online to supplement its long-standing classroom offering.
“Our new online course is designed for motorists 55 years of age and older who want to combine their years of driving experience with new tools and techniques that can lower the risk of a collision,” said John Milbrath, vice president of Automotive Services for AAA Washington. “The course also addresses the effects that aging has on one’s driving ability.”
AAA has partnered with online driving supplier “I Drive Safely” to offer the course, which has been certified by the Washington state Department of Licensing as meeting all of the requirements to qualify for the premium discount. A driver may take the course every two years to maintain the discount.
“We’re excited to be able to offer our Mature Driver course over the internet,” Milbrath continued. “This alternative delivery method is designed to augment our classroom offerings and should prove to be very popular with those senior drivers who don’t reside in an area where the classroom course is available.”
AAA Washington’s Mature Driver class is designed specifically to help older drivers:
- Fine-tune driving skills and update their knowledge of the rules of the road
- Learn more about normal age-related physical changes, and how to adjust their driving to allow for these changes
- Reduce traffic violations, crashes, and chances for injuries
- Learn more about new and emerging vehicle technologies
- Qualify for a two-year auto insurance premium reduction

AAA Washington was instrumental in lobbying for the passage of HB 1953 during the 2007 legislative session in Olympia. The measure provides that an eight-hour crash prevention course for older insureds meeting the criteria of the Department of Licensing may be offered via an alternative delivery method of instruction. Such alternative delivery methods may include internet, video, or other technology-based delivery methods.
AAA Washington has been serving members and the traveling public since 1904. The organization provides a variety of exclusive benefits, including roadside assistance, discounts, maps and personalized trip planning, to its 980,000 members. In addition, its full-service travel and insurance agencies provide products and services for members and the public.
