Before Your College Student Hits the Books, Ensure Their Safety as They Hit the Road, AAA Urges
Bellevue, Wash. (August 23, 2007) – As summer winds down, and young adults prepare to head back to college, AAA offers advice to parents in preparing their student’s car for the trip to school. Prior to sending him or her off down the highway, AAA advises parents to have their student's vehicle checked by a certified automotive technician. The technician should inspect fluid levels, belts, hoses, tire pressure, filters, windshield wipers, brakes, lights and battery. Regular maintenance and service will keep their wheels dependable, and planning ahead will prevent breakdowns that could leave students stranded along the roadside. If you do not already have a trusted automotive technician, visit AAA.com for a list of AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities.
“A young adult leaving home for college is tough enough on parents. They don’t want to imagine getting a call that their car has broken down and stranded them on a busy highway hours from home,” said John Milbrath, vice president of Automotive Services. “Vehicle maintenance is often overlooked as a critical component in ensuring students get back to school safely. A well-maintained vehicle is a safer vehicle and gives parents peace of mind as they see their student off.”
Before they leave home, AAA also suggests teaching your college student how to:
- Keep tires properly inflated
- Check and maintain recommended fluid levels
- Follow manufacturer's maintenance schedule (see Owner’s Manual)
- Change windshield wipers
- >Identify mechanical irregularities and warning lights
For additional peace of mind, parents can give their student a AAA membership as a send-off gift. Signing your college student up for a AAA membership ensures emergency road service response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, anywhere in the United States and Canada. If they are stranded, AAA will either enable the vehicle to operate under its own power or move it to a safe place or repair facility of choice.
As a AAA member, your college student is also entitled to AAA AutoManager. This service allows them to register their vehicle at AAA.com and receive automatic e-mail reminders when it's time for oil changes, tire rotations, fluid level checks, inspections of belts and hoses and other maintenance needs. Additionally, they will be alerted to any recalls issued by the manufacturer of their vehicle and receive a list of recalls currently on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. AAA AutoManager can also be used to troubleshoot problems, estimate repair costs and locate a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility.
