Year after year, the Panama Canal remains one of our most popular cruise destinations. The history and sheer size of this architectural wonder keep travelers in awe. Here are a few facts about the Panama Canal we thought you might be interested in:
- No matter which way a ship transits the Canal, it must pass through two lock systems – 500-feet wide and 42-feet deep, as well as the Gaillard Cut, and two lakes – Gatun Lake and Miraflores Lake.
- The lowest canal toll ever paid was 36 cents in 1928; paid by Richard Halliburton as he swam through it.
- In some years, the dredgers in the Gaillard Cut remove as much as 1,000,000 cubic yards of earth.
- Until Lake Mead was formed by the construction of Hoover Dam, Gatun Lake was the largest artificial body of water in the world.
- The U.S. spent approximately $387 million to build the Panama Canal.
