2 Great Cruises – 1 Modern Marvel
Year after year, the Panama Canal remains one of our most popular cruise destinations. The history and sheer size of this architectural wonder keep travelers in awe. Here are a few facts about the Panama Canal we thought you might be interested in:
  • No matter which way a ship transits the Canal, it must pass through two lock systems – 500-feet wide and 42-feet deep, as well as the Gaillard Cut, and two lakes – Gatun Lake and Miraflores Lake.
  • The lowest canal toll ever paid was 36 cents in 1928; paid by Richard Halliburton as he swam through it.
  • In some years, the dredgers in the Gaillard Cut remove as much as 1,000,000 cubic yards of earth.
  • Until Lake Mead was formed by the construction of Hoover Dam, Gatun Lake was the largest artificial body of water in the world.
  • The U.S. spent approximately $387 million to build the Panama Canal.
